External drive spiral conveyor “Drum Free”: What it is and how it works

The study of the structural limits of traditional central drum systems, combined with increasingly advanced engineering and the use of high-performance materials, has led to a new application concept for spiral conveyors: the external drive system.
In this configuration, the central drum is completely removed and replaced by a peripheral drive system positioned alongside the conveyor belt. A vertical stainless-steel shaft, driven by a gear motor located at the base of the machine, transfers motion directly to the belt through drive sprockets positioned at each spiral level.
The conveyor belt is externally equipped with specially molded teeth that perfectly engage with the drive wheels, ensuring smooth, precise, and constant power transmission.

The advantages of the “drum free” conveyor

1. Unlimited configuration possibilities
ME “drum free” spirals can be designed in unlimited configurations, including round, oval, or combined shapes, with entry and exit sections positioned at any height and at any point along the conveyor.

2. Multiple belts within the same structure
Each belt can operate at different speeds, allowing customized conveying and resting times for different products within the same structure.

3. Enhanced conveyor belt strength
ME advanced and patented DLS-EVO belt chain features profiled teeth welded at four points, ensuring outstanding mechanical strength and long-term reliability.

4. Greater belt width flexibility
The stability of the structure is always guaranteed, freeing the conveyor from traditional width limitations. Belt widths can therefore range freely from 250 mm up to 1300 mm and beyond.

5. Reduced system weight
“Drum free” conveyors weigh 1.5 to 2 times less than traditional central-drum systems. This simplifies installation and positioning while allowing faster heating and cooling cycles, significantly reducing production costs.

6. Improved hygiene
Most structural elements feature rounded shapes, and all machine components are 100% accessible for cleaning. Dirt accumulation is no longer an issue.

7. Lower operating costs
Operating costs for this latest-generation spiral conveyor are 30–50% lower compared to equivalent traditional systems, positioning us among the leaders in the international market.
