Zambelli Packaging: a smarter shrink tunnel

A redesigned air recirculation system makes the shrink tunnel more efficient, more compact and easier to maintain. Backed by over 50 years of end-of-line experience

In the beverage industry, a shrink-wrapped pack does far more than group bottles and cans. It has to withstand transfers along the line, palletizing and transport, and once it reaches the store it becomes part of the product’s image. On top of that, customers are asking for more: the flexibility to switch between formats, tighter control of energy use and new lines that must fit into existing space. That is why Zambelli Packaging has redesigned its shrink wrapper starting from the component with the greatest impact on pack quality, energy use and footprint: the shrink tunnel.

One machine, many formats

The Zambelli Packaging shrink wrapper handles film-only, pad-and-film and tray-and-film packs, as single units or multipacks: bottles, cans and containers for mineral water, soft drinks, energy drinks, beer, wine, juices and spirits. It also runs printed film, where shrinkage has to be perfectly even. Brand owners pre-distort the artwork so that it shrinks into shape, and only uniform shrinkage delivers sharp, legible graphics on the shelf. Zambelli Packaging technology also makes it possible to run thinner films, reducing both material use and the energy needed for shrinking. The shrink wrapper is also available as a combined shrink wrapper and case packer.

The new tunnel: more efficient, more compact

At the heart of the innovation is the way the tunnel handles hot air. Zambelli Packaging has redesigned the internal recirculation so that heat reaches the pack evenly on every side, including the base, where the film overlap has to seal properly. The result is consistent shrinking with no wrinkles or uneven tension, producing neat, stable packs even with printed film. And because the heat is put to better use, less energy is needed to achieve the same result.
The benefit shows in the timing: in internal tests, the pack is already fully formed halfway through the tunnel. Since the pack is formed earlier, the tunnel can be shorter, with less heat lost along the way. The result is a reduced footprint: the new tunnel fits plants where end-of-line space is tight and offers a practical option for upgrading an existing line without redesigning the layout. It is available for both single-lane and multi-lane configurations.

Faster maintenance

The heating elements are housed in a side drawer that slides out sideways and back in easily, so maintenance takes far less time. Airflow can also be adjusted from outside the tunnel using simple knobs, to suit each format without dismantling anything. Fewer hours spent on maintenance mean more production time and less effort for operators. Behind these choices is the work of the engineering team, which develops every solution from the real needs of customers’ lines.

Over 50 years at the end of the line

Based in San Pietro in Casale, near Bologna, and drawing on experience dating back to 1969, Zambelli Packaging designs and builds shrink wrappers, case packers, cartoners, combi systems and robotic solutions for secondary packaging. The company is ISO 9001 certified and operates from three locations: its headquarters in Italy and branches in the United States and the United Kingdom, providing technical support and spare parts close to customers.
The Zambelli Care service rounds out the offer with on-site support worldwide, original spare parts stocked at headquarters and at the branches, and upgrade kits that preserve the value of installed machines over time. Italian engineering that adapts to each customer’s product, format and plant. Your way, our packaging solutions.
