Artificial vision for label control in the wine sector

ITALA G.EL.IP by Opto Engineering® is an industrial camera that has established itself as a significant innovation in the machine vision sector, winning the Silver award at the Vision System Design Innovators Awards 2026

In the wine industry, the label represents much more than a distinguishing feature: it is a communication tool that helps to convey the brand’s value and the quality of the product.
Ensuring that labels are printed correctly and perfectly aligned on the bottle is therefore an essential requirement throughout the entire bottling line. A concrete example comes from a recent project developed thanks to the collaboration between Opto Engineering, which specializes in advanced machine vision technologies, and Makro Labelling, a leading company in the labelling machinery sector.
The aim of the application is to automate the inspection of labels directly on the production line. The system checks in real time both the correctness of the print and the correct orientation of the bottle in relation to the applied label. Continuous monitoring makes it possible to identify any non-conformities right from the early stages of the process, reducing the risk of defective products reaching the subsequent stages of packaging.

One of the main challenges facing the beverage sector is the frequent need to manage format changes and different bottle types. Added to this challenge are the particularly demanding environmental conditions for vision systems: water splashes, foam, humidity and condensation are a daily occurrence on bottling lines. For cameras, lenses and illuminators, these phenomena can compromise performance and cause unplanned machine downtime.
It was precisely this need that led to the design of ITALA G.EL.IP by Opto Engineering: an industrial camera developed to meet the specific application requirements that emerged during the project. What began as a solution to a specific challenge faced by the customer has since established itself as a significant innovation in the machine vision sector, winning the Silver award at the Vision System Design Innovators Awards.

The IP67 certification guarantees effective protection against dust, water and splashes, ensuring uninterrupted operation even in areas subject to frequent washing. This robustness is complemented by liquid-lens technology with autofocus, which automatically manages the format changes typical of beverage production lines: the focus adapts rapidly to different bottles without manual intervention, reducing set-up times and ensuring stable and repeatable image capture.
The result is a high-performance labelling machine, equipped with an advanced vision system that enables wine producers to achieve even higher quality standards. The integration of Opto Engineering’s ITALA G.EL.IP industrial cameras also helps to improve production process efficiency, operational flexibility and reliability, even under the most challenging conditions.
