The SMI Group is today one of the world’s largest manufacturers of bottling and packaging plants, able to meet production requirements up to 36,800 bottle/hour for food and beverage, household cleaning, personal hygiene, chemical and pharmaceutical products.
Cost reduction, energy saving, environmental benefits, increasing competitiveness and improvement of the positioning on the market are all elements that are common to the companies operating in the context of the circular economy.
In SMI, environment and sustainability, tradition and innovation are combined, creating a sound balance, since the activities of the company are driven by the attention to market needs and by the search for cutting-edge technical solutions that help drive continuous change. This change is often related to the specific features of the bottling and packaging industry, that now, more than ever, plays a key role within the business strategies for the environmental protection.
Always connected with the market. Industry 4.0
SMI provides technological solutions of the latest generation inspired by Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT) concepts, that are even more efficient, flexible, eco-friendly, ergonomic, easy to use and to control. Continuous innovation has been driving the success of SMI products for over 30 years and has allowed to design, manufacture and provide thousands of customers all over the world with technologically advanced machines and systems, able to easily and effectively adapt to the needs of a continuously changing market.
SMI machines are equipped with smart intelligence to register, analyze, optimize, change automatically production and operating parameters, ensuring great benefits for the customers.
Automatic shrink wrappers and packers for every need
SMI offers a wide range of high-performance automatic packers for the secondary packaging industry, able to meet every production need.
SMI shrink wrappers represent the best that shrink wrap film technology can offer to pack a wide range of PET, rPET, glass, aluminium containers in packs in film only, cardboard pad + film or in stretch cardboard trays + film in production plants from 30 up to 450 pack/minute (the latter refers to packs in film only on three lanes).
Furthermore, SMI provides a wide range of wrap-around case packers and combined packers to pack PET, rPET, glass, aluminium and cardboard containers suitable to production plants from 30 to 80 packs/minute (according to the range and the container capacity).
Innovation, reliability and sustainability
All development projects and plants manufactured focus on these concepts of business strategy, like EBS ERGON stretch-blow moulders, compact, efficient and eco-friendly plants for the production of PET and R-PET (recycled PET) containers.
At the base of each new development there is the idea of circular economy, namely an economic system designed to regenerate itself. This is not utopia, but concrete reality, today, more than ever, topical.
The use of R-PET for the production of new bottles is the core of the circular economy concept, that consists in collecting materials used and processing them, so that they can be reused or recycled more times, avoiding waste and reducing the environmental impact of the packaging, provided that efficient recycling and waste systems exist.
As the recent project performed in collaboration with Societé des Eaux de Volvic, company belonging to Danone Group, that invested in the purchase of a new bottling line in 8 L 100% recycled plastic containers (rPET) shows, SMI is used to creating a strong synergy with its customers in order to ensure performances that are higher than the standards in terms of reliability, bottle quality, protection of the final product, eco-sustainability and operating efficiency of the whole production process.
Producing even lighter bottles
Another strategy that contributes to safeguarding the environment is based on the study of even lighter PET containers that allow to save greatly on plastic, thus being fully in line with the environmental policy of the largest producers of beverages.
Flexible market-driven organization
In a global market where competition is getting fiercer and fiercer, the possibility to guarantee a “next door” service is for SMI a key factor to effectively and successfully support customers wherever they are. Thus, over the years SMI has set up a widespread network of branches and representative offices in order to extend the service to the widest number of clients.
In the Asian continent SMI operates through two wholly-owned subsidiary companies: SMI Asia Services Sdn Bhd based in Malaysia and SMI Machinery Beijing Co. Ltd based in China (with offices in Beijing, Nanjing and Guangzhou). Local staff’s expertise and know-how ensure an accurate and qualified support to Asian customers.
